Your 5 W is working well but it is a little tight for usual conditions I think..unless you have a beam. I am running here ab_ut 50W peak and the s/w is also fldigi. Rig is a TS870s and the antenna is a single element wire delta loop firing north east- southwest and very low.
Glad to provide your 2nd contact in Olivia. Its a good chat mode and there are regular operators on this channel in EU so you should find qsos fairly easily. There is not much swapping of macro type qsos here.
The 817 is a nice little rig.. I have its bigger br the 897D here for backup and also VHF/UHF coverage.

OK on the mini 5RV..I prefer to use such an antenna with ladder line only via a balun to an atu..the ZS6BKW might fit in your garden that way. and would be more effective multi-band..coax and ladder are a real compromise with the 5rv I think.

3 gEI9FV de N1SG I think the reason for the sigs climbing was my antenna was drying off. I turned the power lower to get my usual 70watts out. It was over 100 when I looked before turning it down. Last question first.... no new software updates for the Flex. I would expect we may get one around the first of December, but Flex is not promising anythQt way they don't get angry people sending nasty -mails. Their next real update is scheduled for January, and it is a fairly substantial one with persistence of settings and the DAX software. In case you don't know DAX is a virtual audio card, which will allow us to hook up to the digital mode programs without any external connections. The rights were purchased from Eugene Muzychenko who wrote the original program VAC which flex users who run digital have purchased, but will not run on the 6500.
Yes, Georgetown is a nice area of DC, I lived about 10 minutes away from there and attended Georgetown University. I can remember when Georgetown was not the nicest area about 1960 and then it went through gentrification. Now most of us common folk can not afford to live there. OK on Flex..well hope your rx antenna becomes functional then - thats one of your desiderata I think. ok on the VAC issue too..so thats now owned by Flex..pretty desirable for them to control that I think.
Re DC the only areas I have visited/stayed in other than tourist ones were Arlington and also out at Tysons Cr (for the mall there). A lot of the bureaucrats (white) seem to commute to Falls Church etc in VA I noticed when using the METRO there - that would be since your time too.
Re the 221 I dont want to rebuild and disturb the calibration charts Steve!! though admittedly that aspect is probably a bit moot now.

We get some bad ones like the one which wiped out the whole center of the next town south, Xenia, in 1974. The same cold front which caused tornadoes in IL and IN yesterday came through here with high winds and heavy rain but no twisters, thank goodness. FB you son liking the sound of ssb. Some of us here have been exchanging photos of kids and grands. I had a nice one from Ken, JA1RZD. I had sent one of my daughter at 18 months sitting at the rig. I am also running a small linear here, ALS-600, currently at 250w out with 19w of drive from the Flex. All runs cool that way. OK about the snow. Wx0KGN de EI9FV well re the swan I would have been lost without the scope for tuning the rtty and keeping it on the nose..but it did settle down after 30 mins or so. Ran the PA nearly in class C on it and at about 150W carefully loaded and no problems. OK on the 811s..yes the 572 had a much better reputation I know. OK re the loose screw.. how very painful. Was that an Ameritron linear?
I have a small cathode driven linear here that is not too stable - a homebrew job I got via Ned EI5DS. it uses a single 572B for a few hundred watts max. I have not got it on line as its not possible with my current situation... my auto atu is not capable of taking its full output... and cathode driven PAs are a funny breed..I LIKE a dip to coincide with max output.
You can surely afford to trash the odd 811A at those prices Dave. Are they still made or NOS these days.
Just starting a refurb job here on a BC221AK which I have had for 30 years but been unused for most of it..hopefully I can get it humming again - frequency measurement will be of academic interest with it hi.

Well re noise level I have no problems on anything above 10 MHz.. 7 can be iffy and 3.5 is a real problem.. those plasma tv sets are a killer. I would argue that sometimes you dont hear me when I can hear you!!.
No beam here nor likely in the near future.. unless I get a country residence.. living in suburbia there is a certain level of discretion needed..wire antennas like this loop are my limit.

80 meters is dreadfully noisy here. Now have an 80 meter loop. It has a coaxial four to one balun. Antenna performs well on 40 meters alsoa^dnt...as far as I know.

An Alpha linear would be fine ..I can easily have one if I give up eating!! lovely kit but for the well-heeled or obsessives only I think.
Re the Italian linears there are various models..I think LPFs are now de rigeur but may not have been hi. Ask Dieter about them. No room for an 80m loop but Ned put one up recently with good results.

It wascold lst oght. eAnB a turned the thremostat down before I went to bed. Ig got to 18 F last night. Turned the thermostat up two hours ago and the furnace is still running.

Yesterday I got an hour of excersize with my group. and an hour of swimming. But it will help only a little unless I eat less.
Nice for you to work w7. The narrower modes are more popular but this 32/1000 mode does very well with weaker signals on 20 meters. I beleive that the weather noise on 80 meters ...longer static bursts...makes the 8 tones or 16 tone modes work better. What some learn on 80 meters is not so true here on twenty meters.

I have never had a 32/1000 olivia contact on 80 meters. Maybe 80 meters is too crowded...too many hams on 80 meters...so it is legal here but not popular. But I do not know how well equiped he is on 30 meters, I don't even know how well equiped I am on 30 meters hihi. No yagi on 30 meters. I can't remember...either my 40 and 80 meter inverted vees or my 40 meter vertical...one of them tunes up on 30 meters. I have an 80 meter loop that also tunes up on 40 meters. It should not do this because I am feeding it with a coaxil four to one balun/transformer which is only supposed to work on the frequency it was made for...80 meters.
